Tamina Gorge

Just behind Switzerland’s oldest surviving baroque baths in Bad Pfäfers is the entrance to a different world: the Tamina Gorge. As you make your way into the depths of the ravine, the atmosphere grows ever more mystical, leading eventually to the source of the thermal waters that have made the region world-famous. Explore the history behind the thermal springs and bathing culture with a visit to the Bad Pfäfers Museum.

An hour’s walk along the river and through the forest will take you to Tamina Gorge, or if you prefer, you can take the bus or a horse-drawn carriage.

Bad RagARTz

Every three years, Bad Ragaz plays host to a unique open-air sculpture exhibition. The triennial festival returns for several months in 2021. The exhibition showcases work by artists from around the globe, inspired by a different theme each year to help keep things fresh. The popular art trail is a big hit with visitors.

Wine tour

Take a wine tour of the Buendner Herrschaft region, Heidiland and the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and explore the region’s cultural and culinary highlights. Tour guide Gian Carlo Casparis will explain about Swiss viniculture, the terroir and the typical local wines produced here. Public tours are available on selected dates or alternatively, you can arrange a private tour.

Five lakes trail

The Five Lakes Trail in Pizol is justifiably renowned as one of Switzerland’s top panoramic hikes. The trail never fails to impress, with its five crystal-clear mountain lakes and breath-taking views of the Glarner and Buendner mountain ranges, the Rhine Valley and vistas stretching as far as Lake Constance.

Good hiking boots and a reasonable level of fitness are essential for this excursion, as the trail includes some steep ascents and descents over scree and boulders.

A stroll through Chur's old town

The alpine city of Chur, with its picturesque old town, is packed full of history and home to a Bishop’s Palace, a three-aisle cathedral and multiple museums, not to mention a tantalising mix of shops, cafés and restaurants. Go for a stroll around Switzerland’s oldest city or join a guided tour to learn more about its history and highlights.

Heidiland Golf Club

The 3,728 meter, 9-hole executive course commands an enviable position in the Graubuenden Rhine Valley. This scenic golf club is ideal for beginners, but also challenging enough to hold the interest of more experienced golfers. Learn the basics, practice your swing, or hone your skills at the driving range, which features 20 covered bays and 50 grass tees. The club’s bistro is open for mid-round snacks and drinks or perhaps a well-deserved meal at the end of your game.

Wine trail

Are you a keen walker with a love of wine? Why not combine both on a wine trail from Bad Ragaz to Chur. You can either walk the entire trail or explore just a part of it. The trail leads walkers past stunning views, magnificent vineyards and picture-postcard villages. See where the fine Buendner Herrschaft wines are made, perhaps dropping in to visit one or two wineries en route.

If you prefer, the wine trail can also be explored by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or public transport.

Schloss Salenegg Winery

Take a walk through the picturesque Buendner Herrschaft landscape to Salenegg Castle in its scenic setting amidst the vineyards. From Bad Ragaz, head towards Maienfeld, where the magnificent chateau sits surrounded by thousands of vines. As well as a shop selling fine wines from the region, visitors can also enjoy wine-tastings, cellar tours and various other events. Please note that advance booking is required for some of the activities.

Heididorf

For over a century, children and adults worldwide have been enchanted by the alpine adventures of Heidi and her grandpa Ohi. Visit Heidi Village for an immersive exploration of Heidi’s world, including her cottage, the stables, the village school and even the famous alpine hut.

Alongside demonstrations of spinning, cheese-making, carving and plenty more, there is also a small petting zoo with goats and chickens.

From Maienfeld railway station, there is the option of following a circular trail through the vineyards to Heididorf and then back to the historical town of Maienfeld.
