Sustainability

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. We are confronted daily with the global warming of recent decades and environmental reports show that most of it is due to greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans. Unfortunately, the effects of this are becoming increasingly threatening.

Sustainability is an important topic for Sorell Hotels and it is important to us to integrate economic, ecological and social measures into our everyday life. Since spring 2022, all our hotels have been Swisstainable Level II and ISO 14001 certified. In addition, Sorell Hotels has been cooperating with myclimate since 2019 and is part of the "Cause We Care" initiative.

We endeavour to reduce "single use plastic" wherever possible. Furthermore, the motto "Take all you can eat, but eat l'l you take". Click here for further information on the food waste efforts of the ZFV companies.

Swisstainable

Sustainability is a priority for Sorell Hotels. Hence the collaboration with Swisstainable, a service provider for sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism in Switzerland.

Nature touches us when we leave it untouched. Switzerland as a tourist destination is synonymous with spectacular mountains, wild gorges and mystical forests. Our nature has the power to energise. This is what we want to preserve - for generations to come. Read more here to plan your holiday in a sustainable way.

As a central element of the sustainability strategy, Swisstainable has defined a programme that is open to all Swiss tourism establishments, whether they have already achieved sustainability certification or are just starting out on this path. A grid of criteria has been developed to inventory the offers and award them a label on three levels.

The Sorell Hotels Switzerland belong to level II - committed - which is committed to sustainable business management. You can find more information on the three levels here.

My Climate "Cause We Care"

Since 2019, Sorell Hotels has been making a contribution to sustainable travel together with the myclimate foundation and the "Cause We Care" initiative. But what exactly is "Cause We Care" and how does it work? You book a stay at one of our Sorell Hotels and voluntarily make a small contribution to climate protection and sustainability. This contribution is doubled by Sorell Hotels and we put both contributions into our "Cause We Care" fund and support selected projects.

These are the projects that we are currently supporting and have supported in the past thanks to your contribution:

2024

Since this year we have a partnership with SlowGrow. SlowGrow operates and develops regenerative "mosaicfarming" and produce svegetables and cereals without pesticides and fertilisers thanks to a high level obiodiversity - in otherwords, "slow grow". The farm won the Prix Climatin 2022. In future, we will work with SlowGrow to cultivate our agricultural land in fron tof the Hotel Zürichberg and make a contribution to sustainability and biodiversity.

In 2024, we will start developing concepts for collaboration with SlowGrow and for cultivation on our land.
So that you can already enjoy this unique approach to agriculture today
we offer
seasonal dishes with SlowGrow products from their farm in Mönchaltorf in the Zürichberg restaurant. In this way, we support innovation and biodiversity with every dish sold, which is also reflected in the flavour

We were also able to support the Agroforestry promotion programme in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Thanks to this programme, agricultural businesse sreceive financial support for the introduction of agroforestry systems. What is agroforestry? Agroforestry has a long tradition in Switzerland. The term refers to the combination of trees and agricultural production on the same land. Agroforestry can make a major contribution to biodiversity, climate protection, adaptation to climate change, soil improvement and enhancement of the cultural landscape

2023

In 2023, the "Cause We Care" contributions went towards the realisation of 23 new e-charging-stations at our Zürichberg, Sonnental, Rex and Seefeld locations. These e-charging-stations are intended to meet the needs of our guests who  are in favour of more sustainable mobility and enable them tot ravel to and from the hotel in a more environmentally friendly way. Naturally, we obtain our electricity from 100% renewable hydropower.

As in 2024, we supported the Agroforestry promotion programme in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein in 2023.

Staff

Protecting and maintaining the environment and its natural resources has been a real longstanding concern for Sorell Hotels. All new members of staff are carefully instructed and trained at regular intervals. Business partners and guests are regularly briefed on the efforts and successes of "Sorell Eco".

Waste

To simply not pollute the environment would be the best solution. But since this is not possible as we know, it is necessary to reduce this unavoidable pollution to a minimum: Produce as little waste as possible and dispose of all waste in an environmentally-friendly way or recycle it. That is why in Sorell Hotels, for example, green electricity and district heating is produced in the most modern biogas plant in Switzerland using food and kitchen waste. Biodiesel is produced from the hotel’s waste cooking oil.

ISO 14001 ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION

The integrated management system at Sorell Hotels has been certified in accordance with the environmental management standard ISO 14001. All the points listed in the ISO 14001 standard are in use and cover the entire value creation chain of the Genossenschaft ZFV companies. In the Sorell Hotel Group, this includes services in the fields of hospitality, restaurants and catering, as well as the management and support processes. As part of this environmental management, environmental targets are set annually for every hotel and for the whole group, and we review whether they have been achieved. This ensures continuous improvement when it comes to environmental topics. Qualified environmental contact people ensure that all employees are trained and made aware of environmentally friendly ways of working.
